When the temperatures drop my morning drink of choice warms up. My body now craves something warm and and preferably creamy, we can thank my Vata tendencies for that (more on that in another post).
Instead of reaching for that caffeine and espresso filled soy latte or mainly sugar chai latte I made something a bit simpler, cheaper, but still reaping the benefits of my body’s desire.
No, this is not your Swiss Miss hot chocolate and is not for the faint of heart. It is simply warmed almond/coconut milk with a teaspoon of cacao powder and possibly some cinnamon or nutmeg. The best part about it is though that you can vary the amount of cacao you put in it to suite your taste.
My usual measurements are:
8-10 oz Almond/coconut milk
1 tablespoon Cacao powder
Dash of cinnamon (optional)
Dash of nutmeg (optional)
I take the milk and warm it in a sauce pan, once it starts to boil at the sides or start to smell very sweet I transfer it to my coffee mug or mason jar. Then I add and mix the tablespoon of cacao. You could stop there but since I have a borderline obsession with cinnamon I throw some of that in there too. If I happen to have some nutmeg I’ll also throw that in to join the party, Tis’ the season!! This mixture will not be sweet so if you want something sweeter add half a teaspoon of raw honey or a little bit of stevia.
So why use cacao instead of cocoa or the Swiss Miss you remember when you were younger? Because with cacao you can have your cake and eat it too and without sacrificing your health or pounds. Raw cacao is dated back as a superfood of the Mayans. Cacao is a superfood because it has so many benefits and contains so many vitamins and minerals.
Some of these benefits include:
High in Antioxidants
Helps metabolize and get rid of free
radicals in the body
Promotes a positive outlook
High in magnesium
High in sulfur, the beauty mineral
Releases endorphins, similar to the “runner’s high”
Bottom line is cacao detoxifies the body while making you happier, healthier, and better looking. Wow, powerful statement? I think not. Cacao is a powerful thing, why do you think the Mayans used it? Give it a shot and let me know what you think.
